Where does the Nitrogen Cycle start..?
Nutritional intake and metabolism are requirements for plants and animals to live. Most nutrients contain proteins - the cellular building blocks of living creatures.
Proteins contain nitrogen-based molecules that are converted into food sources with remaining byproducts from the protein breakdown. The primary compounds produced, that are of concern, are ammonia and ammonia ions. It is toxic to fish and invertebrates when present in minute quantities. To maintain a healthy and balanced aquatic environment, the Ammonia needs to be eliminated in some fashion through the consumption by plants or broken down into less toxic substances through a few bacterial processes.
